Sutherland’s History
Sutherland Elementary School, located in the northern part of Dinwiddie County, opened its doors January 7, 2008. Sutherland replaced Rohoic Elementary which operated for 40 years. Rohoic Elementary School, the precursor to Sutherland, was completed in 1968 and accommodated 350 students under the leader ship of Principal Beasley Jones. Grades first through seventh were taught there that year. In 1976 a gymnasium was added in addition to classroom modulars in 1990. To accommodate the growing community and make a good investment Rohoic Elementary became Sutherland at the new schools groundbreaking September 9, 2006. Sutherland now educates all elementary grades; Kindergarten through fifth grade. The faculty and staff of Sutherland Elementary believe that our job is to prepare today’s children for tomorrow’s world by encouraging them to become life-long learners and productive citizens. At Sutherland, we build opportunities for students that promote independence and cooperation through a variety of education experiences in a safe and healthy environment. We are the home of the Scotties and have a Scottish Terrier, McDuff, who come to visit us regularly. In 2016 Dinwiddie County has provided us with out first School Resource Officer.
